Quick answer: You can often return an Amazon gift without a paper receipt, but you usually need the 17-digit Amazon order number from the packing slip or a digital gift receipt. The gift giver can share a digital gift receipt from Your Orders. If you have neither, ask the sender for the receipt link or contact Amazon customer service; a shipping label or a photo of the product alone is not a guaranteed substitute.
Updated October 29, 2026. This guide covers U.S. Amazon.com gift returns. Eligibility, drop-off methods and refund timing depend on the exact order and item.
What you need to return an Amazon gift
| What you have | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Digital gift receipt | Open the receipt link and follow Amazon’s gift-return process. |
| Packing slip with 17-digit order number | Enter that number in Amazon’s Returns Center and check the available items. |
| Gift but no order number | Ask the gift giver to share the digital gift receipt from Your Orders. |
| Gift was not marked as a gift | Request a gift receipt from the purchaser or ask Amazon support about that order. |
| Item is damaged or appears used | Document its condition and check the order-specific return or support options. |
Amazon’s official gift-return instructions say the recipient normally enters the order number in the Returns Center using a desktop browser. They also explain how the purchaser can share a gift receipt even if the order was not originally marked as a gift.
How to return a gift with a gift receipt
- Find the 17-digit order number on the digital gift receipt or packing slip.
- Sign in to the Amazon account you want to use for the gift return and open the Returns Center.
- Enter the order number and choose the eligible gift item.
- Choose a return reason and one of the drop-off or shipping methods Amazon actually offers for that item.
- Save the return confirmation or QR code. Follow the instructions about boxing, labeling and accessories; do not assume every item qualifies for a box-free drop-off.
- Track the return and check your Amazon gift-card balance once the refund is processed.
Important: A gift receipt helps identify the order; it does not override restrictions for nonreturnable items or guarantee a free drop-off option. Review the actual return screen before handing anything over.
No gift receipt? Ask for this, not the buyer’s password
The simplest solution is to ask the gift giver to open Your Orders and use Share Gift Receipt. Amazon says the purchaser can share it by email. You do not need access to their account, and you should never ask them to disclose a password or payment details. If the sender cannot locate the order or the return page does not recognize the number, use Amazon’s official support channel for order-specific help.
A plain gift message, product barcode, shipping-tracking number or outer-box label may not contain the 17-digit number the online gift-return flow requires. Before discarding packaging, check the enclosed packing slip and any gift-receipt email or text.
Where does the refund go?
For an eligible gift return initiated by the recipient, Amazon says the refund is issued as an Amazon.com gift card to the account used to make the return. The original purchaser has different refund choices when they initiate their own return. Do not assume you will receive cash or a credit to a bank card you never used for the purchase.
If the screen shows a $0 refund, an unexpected destination or a failed return, do not submit blindly. Save the order and return details and contact Amazon before shipping the item. Community discussions describe confusing refund screens, but individual reports do not establish Amazon policy.
Does the 2026 holiday return extension cover gifts?
For eligible Amazon.com purchases made November 1 through December 31, 2026, Amazon’s announced extended deadline is January 31, 2027. The stated exception is Apple-branded products, due January 15, 2027. Amazon says this holiday window applies to items sold through Amazon by both Fulfillment by Amazon and seller-fulfilled merchants, while existing eligibility and refund conditions remain in place.
That does not mean every October gift gets the January deadline. If you are buying ahead of November, see our Amazon versus Walmart holiday return comparison for the different October start dates. Always use the return-by date shown for the particular order.
What if the gift came from a third-party seller?
Check the seller and fulfillment information on the order. Amazon’s return policy explains that seller-fulfilled third-party returns may go back to the seller rather than an Amazon facility. The seller must provide a U.S. return address, a prepaid label, or a refund without requiring the item back, as applicable. Follow the specific return instructions; do not mail a gift to an address guessed from the packaging.
Before returning, use this checklist
- Confirm the exact item, variant and order number.
- Check the item’s return eligibility and deadline, especially for electronics and restricted categories.
- Keep accessories, manuals, tags and original packaging until the return is resolved.
- Photograph damage or missing parts before packing. Our used-item-sold-as-new guide explains what to document.
- Review the stated refund destination and amount before final confirmation.
- Save your drop-off receipt or tracking record.
Frequently asked questions
Can I return an Amazon gift without knowing who bought it?
You still need enough order information for Amazon to identify the eligible purchase. A digital gift receipt or the 17-digit order number is the normal route. Without either, contact Amazon support; a successful return is not guaranteed.
Can the gift giver send a receipt after delivery?
Yes. Amazon says the purchaser can visit Your Orders and share a gift receipt, including when the item was not initially marked as a gift.
Will I get an Amazon gift card instead of cash?
Amazon’s published gift-return instructions say eligible recipient-initiated refunds go to the Amazon.com gift-card balance of the account used for the return. Confirm the actual refund details on your order.
Does a gift receipt make every item returnable?
No. Item restrictions, condition requirements, seller policies and the return deadline still matter. Check the order-specific options before sending anything back.
