If you ordered an item as new and it arrives looking used, document the condition before doing anything else. An opened outer box alone does not prove prior use, but scratches, dirt, missing accessories, broken seals, saved account data or wear can.

Check what you actually ordered
Open Your Orders and confirm the listing condition, seller and exact item. Amazon allows both Amazon and third-party sellers to offer products, so verify that your order really says new before reporting a condition problem.
Photograph the condition first
Take clear photos of the box, seals, serial number, scratches, dirt, missing parts and anything that suggests previous use. For electronics, also note unexpected saved accounts, setup history or accessories that appear opened. Keep the packaging until the issue is resolved.
Use the return reason that matches the problem
Amazon says many eligible items can be returned from Your Orders, with the available refund or replacement options depending on the item, seller and reason. If an item sold as new arrives materially different from what you ordered, describe that accurately instead of choosing a generic reason.
If a third-party seller fulfilled the order
Check the seller shown in Your Orders and keep your messages in Amazon. The FTC recommends reviewing marketplace return rules and keeping copies of seller communications when an item is not as described.
For electronics and personal data
If the device appears previously configured, avoid signing into sensitive accounts until you decide whether to keep it. Photograph what you can without exposing personal information, then follow Amazon’s return flow if the condition is unacceptable.
Quick checklist
- Confirm the listing says new.
- Photograph the condition and packaging.
- Check seller, fulfillment and missing accessories.
- Start the return from Your Orders while the item is still within its applicable return window.
- Keep messages and return tracking until the refund or replacement is complete.
